Remembering Paul Newman

A legend passed away last night and left the world a little darker with his absence. Paul Newman died at 83 years young. His cinematic career ran like an AFI greatest movies hit list: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Hud, The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting, and countless others. His onscreen connection with Robert Redford was unmatched, there hasn't been that much cool sharing the screen until Clooney and Pitt hooked up for the Ocean's series.

In his later career, Newman checked in with sporadic, but memorable performances: reprising his Fast Eddie Felson character from The Hustler to play alongside a budding Tom Cruise in The Color of Money, playing a gangster boss in The Road to Perdition, and voicing the patriarch auto in Pixar's Cars.

For you younger folks, you may only know him as the smiling face from the Newman's Own brand of pasta sauce, salad dressing, popcorn and other grocery goods. He started this brand with writer A.E. Hotchner as a way to generate revenue for charitable causes. 100% of all proceeds are donated to various charities.

You can easily find more in-depth biographies and retrospectives on Newman's life and career elsewhere. But, this is a small nod to one of the coolest cats ever to grace the silver screen. To Cool Hand Luke.

Nice tribute, Alton. Agree with you 100%. Moment of silence is in order for this cool dude. Great professional in his field; individual spirit as witnessed by his car racing hobby; married to one woman his entire life; philanthropist before that was cool and de rigeur amongst Hollywood types ....I'm sure the list could go on, but right there, that's about 90% more than most people accomplish in their lives. Thanks for writing up this piece!
